課程概述

It is said that contemporary Anglo-American philosophy took the "linguistic turn" and then the "cognitive turn" in the twentieth century. The linguistic turn began with the three major figures, i.e., Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein, and with the rise of logical positivism (and later logical empiricism). In its heyday there came Quine, Kripke, and Putnam. The cognitive turn began with the computational/representational theory of mind and cognition. The major figures in this field are, to name some, Fodor, Block, Dretske, Searle, Dennett, and Churchland. Meanwhile, theories of scientific explanation have occupied contemporary philosophical studies of sciences ever since Carl Hempel. We will introduce the development from his Covering Law models to Salmon's SR approach. This course is a general survey of the three lines of contemporary Anglo-American philosophical development.

課程目標
This course is a general survey of contemporary Anglo-American philosophy along three lines of development: the linguistic turn, the cognitive turn, and philosophies of scientific explanation. We will not go over the details of the theories those philosophers advocate. We will instead focus on general introductions to the main ideas.
